What are these "scratches" on my screen? Used Macbook off eBay.

I was told it had "Micro scratches not immediately visible but in sunlight / torchlight they can be seen easily. They won't come off with screen cleaning solution and a microfiber cloth. What am I looking at here, damage to the anti-glare or something else? They're like weird abrasion marks instead of scratches.

Thanks.

I'm asking what the scratches are, if you can't answer then why reply?

Really? You are asking us, your fellow end users, to determine the nature and cause of the scratching from a picture without being able to physically inspect the device.

We have told you all we can in this remote setting. Not sure what more you can expect given we are not Apple employees and only have a picture.

That said, the pattern of the scratches (short, random strokes) suggests to me that someone repeatedly used a hard-tipped pointer to show others something displayed on the screen. That permanently damages the thin, anti-glare coating. If the original owner were that careless with an expensive computer's screen......

The only fix for damaged anti-glare coating is a new display. If this is a Retina Macbook Pro, that requires a entire new assembly that, depending on screen size, can set you back US$500-650 in the U.S. based on other user reports here. That assumes it is not too old for Apple to service:

Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty - Apple Support

Others recommended reporting it to eBay for a return. I concur.

If you really want an in-person eval, have Apple examine it:

We can do more more here.

Do not have it in front of me, and do not have access to a crystal ball.

There are 57 MBP models since 2006, and you do not say what exact Mac... not all had Anti-reflective coating.

So what is the difference anyway (?)

Either/ or —It is "weird abrasion marks instead of scratches"— you want if fixed, replace the display.

or follow the advice above.

Yes unsightly if not distracting...

What are you hoping for here?

Okay, we’re done here. Even if you knew “what” the scratches are there’s nothing you can do about it. You refuse to accept the obvious fact that you were lied to by the seller in their description of the condition.

There’s nothing more we can help you with. Good luck.
