Is it possible to apply dB/volume changes in the timeline rather to an actual audio clip?

I'm working on a project that has fixed points where the background music goes loud and quiet, which makes changing the background music or shifting it backwards or forwards difficult as it also moves the DB settings with it, making a lot of work.

Is it possible to fix or apply dB adjustments to the timeline rather than an audio clip, so that dB/volume changes stay relative to the time regardless of which audio clip you use underneath?

For changing the music, you could try putting the music inside a compound clip, and adjusting the audio on the compound; then you could edit the compound to slide or replace the music, but when working inside the compound there is no clear way to identify what part of the video it corresponds to.

For being able adapt to adjustments in the dialog, you can drag a rectangle to select multiple keyframes and move them all at once.

Correct - it's easy to apply dB adjustments directly to an audio clip.

However, if you make multiple dB adjustments to account for dialogue or the video, and later want to replace the music with a different track, or move the music backwards or forwards as whole, it means you have to manually move or redo all of the dB adjustments.

Here the music rises and falls, to account for dialogue and cut scenes:

I would like a way to fix dB changes to the timeline so I could replace or move the music without redoing them. Maybe there's another way that doesn't mean applying it to the timeline - I just don't want to keep doing the same dB edits every time the music track is changed or shifted as I have more of this type of video to do for my project.

I don't understand what you mean by applying volume adjustment to the timeline. Volume adjustment takes effect after you apply it to a clip.😓 Please show me the screenshot and explain specifically which part is bad and how.

Actually that's a good point - I've been doing the points in smaller groups but I could do the whole clip, especially if I do the joins up-front as a compound clip and make it longer than I need... I can then cut and paste the attributes to swap tracks completely in one go.

Maybe I'll put in a feature request as I think what I originally asked would be a nice to have :-)

Basically, no, you can't control volume on a whole Storyline, or Lane of clips.

The only solution is to pack them all away in a Compound Clip and adjust the volume of that CC.

But then you can't work with edits and sound at the same time.

We've been waiting for Roles based mixing and mastering tools for over ten years now.
