Google result links do not open in a new tab

I'm using Safari as my browser. When I search for something, I get Google response links. When I click on one of the links, I want it to open in a new tab so I can quickly go back to the Google response tab for other links. How do I make Google open in new tabs? I think this is a Safari settings issue.

You would have to tell the search engine to do that. Startpage has settings to do that without needing to hold down the command key. Check with the search engine provider.

Good point, Barney.

I checked and this is true of google as well. In my case, it is set to open in what it terms "new window" (which is meant really as "in a separate page", which can be in another window or tab, depending on browser settings).

I always had it this way, and I believe it is the default.

For the benefit of the OP:

open google.com

click on Settings

choose Search Settings, and then Other Settings

Barney and Luis, I've done all you've suggested with no change. When on a google results page, if I click on one of the links, it opens on the same tab, over the google results. This just started with my upgrade to Sonora. I don't know if this is a google issue or Sornora issue. If I click on a link on a website, like Barney's link to Startpage, it opens in a new tab leaving this page as-is. I'll research more in google and post any findings/solutions here. Thanks for your help.
