Keyboard space appearing in iMessage, but no keyboard.

For the past few weeks, I've noticed a little glitch when I open some iMessage threads on my iPhone. As you can see in the screenshots, the space for the keyboard is there, but the keyboard doesn't show up. But when I select the input area, that's when the keyboard shows up. When this issue comes up, it's on any iMessage thread that I select. I've rebooted my iPhone several times. I will say I think I've noticed that a trigger for the issue is when my phone connects to CarPlay in my car...possibly. I'm running the latest iOS version. Any ideas on what is causing this or is this just something that Apple needs to fix in a future software update?
