I currently have a iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) can it be updated to the latest software that's out there or is it too old?

Trying to find out if I can update this desktop to the current/latest software that's available? Or is my machine too old now? If it can be updated - please let me know what the current/most up to date software is called please. Thank you. David

As Neil mentioned yes it's pretty old and no it cannot go beyond High Sierra which is many generations behind now. Considering the computer is almost almost 14 years old, you seriously should consider replacing it while it still works somewhat. Eventually (assuming you haven't already had this occur) you are going to run into compatibility issues with current web sites not being able to use there version of Safari you have installed. Other issues include if you happen to use TurboTax to do your taxes, every year we hear from users that cannot use current versions of TT due to incompatibility and the list of problems goes on.

Since Apple ties Safari updates to macOS updates, and you can't upgrade past High Sierra, you might want to install a third-party browser.

Firefox 115 ESR will run on High Sierra. It's not the current version of Firefox, and it isn't getting new features. However, Mozilla says they will provide "critical security updates" until September 2024.
