Items sent over AirDrop to new MacBook end up in Downloads of old MacBook

I'm migrating files to a new M3 MacBook. When I attempt to send them over AirDrop from my old MacBook they just end up in Downloads on the old MacBook. Both machines are logged into the same Apple ID.

Old is running Sonoma 14.2 and new is running Sonoma 14.2.1.

On the old machine, the new machine just appears as my name with no device name underneath it.

On the new machine, the old machine appears as my name with "MacBook Pro" beneath it.

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 14.2

This is a corporate managed machine so I didn't get the normal initial boot of a fresh machine and Migration Assistant is blocked by the administrator.

In the end the problem with AirDrop was caused by VPN. Disabling the VPN fixed my issue.

The most trouble free way to move to a new machine, is using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot of a brand new machine— you have one shot here. Set up your MacBook Pro - Apple Support

The second best way is use the Migration Assistant.

You can use a flash thumbdrive

or remove the old machine or sign out of the AppleID if you have an issue—
