iMac using Monterey very slow using Safari

Been having issues with the computer being very slow, takes ages for safari to load and keeps sticking. IMac is eight years old. Ran diagnostics. No issues. Downloaded CleanMyMac X to investigate. Obviously a few apps and things not used, which I've got rid of... I moved folders from my desktop too. I got a Heavy Memory Usage message - almost full. I have 283GB available on HD. Memory seems to vary from 1GB available to 5GB of the 8GB available when all i have open is Safari. Top Consumer was com.apple.WebKit.WebContent with over 2gb - no idea what that is! Although after a restart that has gone down to 369mb and Safari is top at 1.21 GB.

Any ideas? I keep getting the rainbow wheel of death simply trying to log into my email via the web...

Thanks!

iMac 21.5″, macOS 12.7
