Deleting files from a Mac

Why does it take ages to delete a file on a Mac? The file is 12 gb and its been at it for 2 hours now. Is there no simple way?

A previous answer was "The shortcut is to click on the desktop somewhere, or if you are in finder already that is fine. Then hold Command + Shift + while holding those hit Delete & release. Then just hit Enter when asked if you want to Empty Trash."

Which makes no sense whatsoever.
