After Migration My New Mac Mini is so slow

I used to use a Mac mini with an M1 processor. Now I have switched to the Mac mini with the M2 pro processor. When I set up the new computer through the time machine with Migration, the new Mac mini started to run extremely slowly. Moreover, there is the problem of heating. What can I do about it?

Mac mini, macOS 14.2

A quick and easy check is to open Activity Monitor and see which items are are using the most CPU and also check to see which apps are accessing your drives and also check memory to see if there is excessive memory usage and swapping.

You can take screen shots of those and post them here to have a look at.

Also, depending on how many apps and data were migrated and how many external drives are connected, Spotlight can consume a lot initially cataloging everything since it is a new machine.

Well, it's still under warranty so you can have Apple look at it for the heat issue. Generally when a computer is running slow, there are specific reasons such as the following.

  • Sometimes the user has an antivirus app installed. They will seriously slow down the computer.
  • If the Mac has an older, slower mechanical drive, it will be much slower than an SSD's performance. Do both of your computers have the same HD?
  • If a computer is not periodically restarted that allows its RAM to become overloaded and slowness can occur. The amount of RAM that is installed will affect its performance. This can be true when certain Adobe apps are being used as they are RAM intensive. Does this apply to you?

You get the idea now. In order to give you any useful advice, we need more information. You might download and install the free app EtreCheck. Then run it and be sure to allow full disk access. If you then post the results down below under Additional text we can get an overview of what is going on in the new computer and then provide a specific response.
