When I attempt to log on to the Apple Tv app the sign in times out. I've tried two active Apple ids with the same result. After providing my ID I receive a code which I enter, the signing in screen appears with the spinning wheel but the sign in just times out. I've also tried signing in by linking via my iphone but with the same result. All other apps work perfectly. Any suggestions on how to resolve this problem will be appreciated.
Please see if new system software is available for the Fire TV device. The Apple TV app may behave unexpectedly if the system software isn’t up-to-date. That seems to have solved it for several other users with sign-in issues.

Thanks for your response. I've checked and the system software is up-to-date so that doesn't appear to be the issue. Following advice from Amazon I also toggled off the HDMI CEC device control and restarted the device but that didn't work either. I know it's unlikely but is it possible the issue is to do with the HDMI on the tv which is an 8-years old Samsung smart tv?
To the best of my knowledge, the HDMI connection isn’t affecting the app functionality. The app communicates through the home network with remote servers. The HDMI connection is only used for the decoded video/audio signal to the TV, which is handled by the device, not the app.
Yes, it's pretty much what I thought. It's just that I've run out of ideas. It would be great to have an explanation because that might lead to a work-round. All other apps including paid apps work perfectly but the Apple TV app won't sign in - just times out. It's a bit frustrating really because I purchased the device principally to watch Apple TV. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to respond.
