Logic Pro: I am using an Alesis Q49 midi controller. The fader works for volume. The pitch wheel works to control the pitch. The modulation wheel registers on the Logic control bar and display, but nothing happens when moving the modulation wheel. How do I assign the wheel to basic modulation?

It really depends on what instrument you're using. Some things like Alchemy will let you set up the mod wheel in the controller making. An easy way to check is to load up a sting instrument. When playing a note moving the mod wheel will usually bring in the tremolo. Using a vintage organ will change the tone of the organ.

The mod wheel should control modulation on most instruments without needing to map it.
Sounds to me like you have mapped a load of things as Control surfaces unnecessarily, including perhaps the middle D key.
I would delete all Control surface for the QX40 and see if that sorts it all out

And, when I move the mod wheel the Controller Assignments page changes (See pictures). When the mod wheel is down, the top NO Zone shows. When the mod wheel is up, the New Zone shows. The fader still operates correctly as a volume controller, and the pitch wheel still alters the pitch. It is just the mod wheel that's not working. I've tried several different basic Logic stock instruments., including several wind and string instruments. Still, the mod wheel has no effect. Sorry to say, I just don't understand this stuff.

I want to add 2 more things.
I believe my modulation wheel used to work with the same MIDI controller.
And, for some reason, all of a sudden, the middle D key on the keyboard doesn't sound. All the other keys do.
