Why is autocorrect less accurate in iOS 17?

Is this another iOS 17 bug? Autocorrect used to be quite accurate. Now it’s not nearly as good at guessing what I intended to enter. Also trying to tap to insert the cursor, 90% of the time selects a word and won’t quit, just selects it over and over. I have to go down to the spacebar and situate the cursor that way.

This is definitely an issue which appeared with the latest update. Three reasons 1) issue appeared right after updating , 2) the same issue happened on a family member’s phone around the same time, 3) the issue is happening in different languages. It is so terrible that suggestions are proposing words that don’t even exist or which are grammatically incorrect. Over to you Apple to fix this, otherwise we are all better off turning off autocorrect.

I’ve been seeing a steady decline in autocorrect for about a year but hugely worse in the last month or so. Yesterday my phone autocorrected “12-6 pm” to “5:48pm”. I mean where did that even come from?? It frequently autocorrects legitimate words for zero reason. Previously it would correct spelling errors for the word I was clearly typing, now it changes a word to a different word entirely that has no relevance to the message I’m writing. I’m assuming they threw in AI untested, perhaps? Super annoying

I agree completely. Everyday I get corrected incorrectly and it is driving me crazy. I am an editor and it is frustrating and embarrassing to have my messages typed in clearly and then after I've hit send corrections I don't make occur -- and then my sentences are gibberish. Example, today I typed this: "they all ring at the same time with different rings." I saw that it was accurate. I sent the text and then read this: "they all ring at the same time with separate rings." Ugh. That one isn't a big deal but sometimes the "help" I get is so bad I have to apologize and hope that it doesn't impact my livelihood. Also adds an extra "g" and a space with words that end in "ing." What in the AI shenanigans is going on?

Me too.

Only very recently has the predictive text on my iPad Pro 12.9 (3rd gen) really deteriorated.

It see s to have happened since the Spanish and English keyboards we re merged in to one.

(The a I d sentence was what the keyboard suggest we without further correction s by me, as is this seen).

THE ABOVE TWO SENTENCES WERE TYPED USING THE PREDICTIONS THAT THE KEYBOARD SUGGESTED - WITH NO AMENDMENTS BY ME.

HERE ARE THE TWO SENTENCES INCLUDING MY AMENDMENTS (in other words, the correct versions).

It seems to have happened since the Spanish and English keyboards were merged into one.

(The above sentence was what the keyboard suggested without further corrections by me, as is this sentence).

The words in bold were not mistyped by me. I’m stead, (Instead) the predictive/auto-correct function pre-emptied (pre-empted) or corrected my English, sometimes ignoring fairly obvious common grammar rules, almost as if a substandard form of artificial intelligence was directing affairs behind the scene s (scenes).

One common mistake you can see is the predilection to type the singular form of a words (word) when I have typed the plural or vice versa.

Note in the sentence above, I typed correctly ‘form of a word’ but the predictive/auto-correct substituted the plural form ‘words’ which would never be possible in English grammar. The combo ‘a words’ can, I’m almost certain, never exist in English.

This means that there must be a but (bug).

Now, unfortunately, given the reality of interacting with an enormous corporation like Apple.. even if I opened a chat with a live Apple assistant … I fear that no thing (nothing) will be done .. until an executive somewhere directly experiences the same short (short) (sort) of anomalies.

The autocorrect has gotten

to **** since the advent of ChatGPT and ai talk bots

pre sure they changed autocorrect from Siri that actually learnt your typing patterns to an ai model that needs to relearn everything. Thus autocorret is broken. I noticed but didn’t change it to make my point.

emphasise was impossible to type due to auto correct making it a stupid.

we’re living in a birth of a new age, all we knew as normal is being changed by any and all trying to add ai into everything.

my dishwasher uses ai tech to do its task, why? What was wrong with my old dishwasher? Why does it need “a integration”

TLDR.

autocorrect is controlled by a new ai model and it’s dumber than Siri, weird right. But at least she put effort into our typing patterns and the common misspellings we do. Now it’s a new beast and due to ais natures it’s lobotomised every single minute of every hour of the day. Thus, it can’t comprehend how we type.

It's scary. Autocorrect is literally the worst program -of anything- I have ever used (even though I have problems with Adobe, too). It changes perfectly average words and names that I spell correctly to something else. Because the words are quotidian, I sometimes don't check them: why would the autocorrect change "you" to "you've" ? Or the name "Scott" to 'Scout" -but it does (and just did). You can't write with it without re-doing, that is, re-writing, the same message. Even then, you need to review to see that it has not again mis-corrected the text.

I am a lawyer. This is horrible. The only advantage to Iphone is that, at least in Manhattan, when it actually breaks it is easier to obtain service quickly. If only Google, Nokia, had responsive stores like the 'genius bar' I would have stayed with Android (though the assistants at the genius stores are far from geniuses, and often rely on the same online information available without coming in).

iOS updates generally aim to enhance user experience, boost security, and fix bugs rather than disrupt core features. Autocorrect issues after updates might stem from underlying, unmentioned factors. Updates won't typically alter personal data but may refine settings or features. Backup before major updates for safety. Review Apple's update details and backup advice for a smooth process.

So many people cannot be wrong. I noticed the issue in iOS 14 and it has gotten progressively worse. 17’s autocorrect almost makes me want to turn it off. It’s as if it has forgotten all previous words I have used. If I get to the point where I have to turn it off. I’m going Android. It’s not any better but they don’t charge a premium price claiming to be better.
