Why is autocorrect less accurate in iOS 17?

Is this another iOS 17 bug? Autocorrect used to be quite accurate. Now it’s not nearly as good at guessing what I intended to enter. Also trying to tap to insert the cursor, 90% of the time selects a word and won’t quit, just selects it over and over. I have to go down to the spacebar and situate the cursor that way.

I am seeing a similar issue. I get random letters added to the end of correctly spelled words. (“Running” became “running gxg”).

the cursor select feature has also fallen off the map. It selects entire words or incorrect words and won’t let me do the precise cursor select every time.

At least by finding this thread, it makes me feel less crazy.

Just wanted to add another voice to the chorus of folks who are experiencing a degradation in the quality of auto-correct. In addition, sometimes I’ll select the correct word prediction but a completely different word will be inserted. It’s simply unreliable. Doesn’t instil a ton of confidence in a company flirting with AI enhancements. As an Apple user since the late 80’s it’s disappointing and frustrating!

This is the perfect answer. Now I’ve always used auto correct and predictive text, but it has definitely gone wonky and I’m so glad I found this thread of other people seeing the same so I know I’m not crazy. I believe I had always - noting that with autocorrect on and predictive text off at the current moment, always was corrected to ‘salads’ 🤣 - used autocorrect and predictive text since they’ve been a thing, they’ll of course never be perfect, but whatever new model they’re using is nuts. This is now working much better and the glitch where I can’t slide to select where in a word I want to make a correction is gone, so that’s great.

I only updated in the past month or so and additionally hadn’t been typing that much on my phone until lately so it took me a minute to both tie it to the iOS update and to find some time to start digging. Thank you for your answer. Also shooting for ‘for’ resulted in “go” but at least it’s now easier to go back and correct these things now 🤣

Lastly I don’t think I saw this anywhere in the thread so I’ll add from iOS 17 release notes - not a lot of detail but here it is:

Improved autocorrect accuracy makes typing even easier by leveraging a powerful transformer-based language model (iPhone 12 and later)

So while I know it’s always been AI behind it and am not “scared” of AI, whatever model they’re using now is NOT where it’s at!

Autocorrect has gone sloppy for a while now maybe 3-4 years now. Also typing is difficult too cause the phone picks the wrong letter I type. It used to be much better in the past. Even in Spanish version. I am requesting Apple to please fix this. Sometimes autocorrects to negative words or words that may sound really bad for the recipient. Sometimes the sender doesn’t notice until it’s too late to retract. Anyway please 🙏 fix this issue. If it continues I may have to consider to leave Apple and go PC again. I have to say it’s getting that frustrating!! I am willing to go change. I never thought I would say this. But really please Apple go get your teams and fix this! 🤓🤓

For me to take the time to search out this forum is a sure sign that Iphone autocorrect is just about to drive me insane. It used to work ok, and actually learned as it got used to texting patterns and languages. (I write in 3 languages). It comes up with crazy suggestions that are not at all predictive, nor related to the message that I am writing. It replaces perfectly good word combinations with gibberish, without my consent. It even decided to put accents on letters in my name. Really? Why?

I am really disappointed that a product that worked ok (there were always little quirks) to one that is so disruptive, that I am going to turn it off completely.

Please fix this, Apple.

What’s baffling is that literally anywhere else I type nowadays the text prediction and autocorrection is spot on, especially with the roll out of AI. There’s really no excuse I should be fighting with my phone so much. I have never had a use for the word “ducking”, yet iphone can’t seem to ducking understand that. It’s a source pf constant irritation for me.

Does anyone else have it happen where ordinary words are "corrected" to obscure ones from other cultures?

Like the entire purpose is to prove how culturally aware the programmers are...

"What?! You didn't want 'Nasi Rawon'?!

OHHH you meant 'Nasal Congestion' my bad...

I guess I just have too many cultural references in my mind! Silly me!"

But surely 20-somethings in silicon valley would never act like that.

It's just the same in 18, and clearly from posts before these same in earlier versions. I have just bought a 'new' 13 Pro and having decided to leave Android after succumbing to media input I am feeling somewhat conned. The android typing experience and auto correct is sooo much better that Apple is in danger of losing a new customer very very quickly. Not that they will care from the looks of the extended issue period highlighted in this post and the millions still buying iPhones 🥴

So SravaKrA, here's a coincidence for you; my iPhone starts to send nonsenses messages around Summer 23. It got worse so I decided it must be a screen problem and bought a new phone about a month ago.

The coincidence is that the new phone does just what my other phone did; well would you believe that?

So now I find I'm out of pocket for a new phone with no improvement. . .

Another coincidence is this started happened about the time of the update to iOS 17, I had no real problems before that.

Who would believe it?

How about you guys fix it instead of blaming/ shaming your customers?

Autocorrect should be called autoincorrect. Wow. My sons name is Elliot not Weliot and he’s one person not Elliots ffs. Literally every single word I type is destroyed. I hate this

I can’t even send a small text to my wife with out proof reading it.

just typing this small paragraph I’ve had to make seven corrections. Apple you want to be a 4 billion dollar company. Fix this small stuff or you’ll start to lose money. I will not put up with this much longer.
