MacBook Pro M3 Max intermittent USB 3.0 external drive mounting issues

I have a brand new Nov '23 MacBook Pro with the M3 Max chip, with the latest OS, that is causing issues with external hard drives that use USB 3.0.

I have 3 separate external drives, all USB 3.0, all different brands (Seagate, WD, etc.), and sometimes they connect to the Mac no problem, other times they don't appear in Disk Utility at all. When the latter occurs, I have to plug them into my old '13 MacBook Pro to have Disk Utility recognize them, and run First Aid there to repair (which frequently takes 10+ attempts to fix).

My impression is that there's an issue with Thunderbolt 4.0 ports and USB 3.0, which in the case of hard drives, completely borks the hard drives.

I'm likely going to have to invest in a USB hub to do the handoff, but jeeeeeez is this a bad issue if it is in fact Apple's Thunderbolt 4.0 ports actually causing damage to external hard drives using tech as recent as USB 3.0. I shouldn't have to upgrade my external drives in order to use them without causing damage to them.

From the consumer's perspective, the options are:

  1. Break down and buy new hard drives ($$$)
  2. Buy a USB hub to be the intermediary ($$$)
  3. Have my workflow come to a standstill until I do one of the above because I have to spend ~30m repairing the drives repeatedly on an old Mac.

I should also mention they're not disconnecting (which the majority of Google search and forum results on this topic seem to be). This is what feels like a very serious issue, and one that's using fairly common modern tech.

Another User with a similar Thread wrote this: Go to System Preferences > Privacy & Security > Allow accessories and changed the settings in Allow accessories to connect to "Automatically When Unlocked". Connected my adapter again and voila, it shows up.

Hope this helps.

This was really Helpful for me.

My OLd HDD which is HFS+ formatted is now Recognised by my M3Max MacOS Sonoma 14.4.1 BEcause of this change in the settings described above.

This has gotten so bad I've resorted to AirDropping files from my 2013 Macbook Pro to my 2023 Macbook Pro. The new Macbook Pro not only cannot recognize, but also cannot disconnect from, external hard drives. Meaning, every time you connect one, you have to force eject, which requires running First Aid on the drive on my old Macbook before the new one will recognize it again. I'm done.

I would like to write my experience of using this device.I installed Kingston KC3000 M.2 NVMe SSD (2280) 4096G in it.File copying speed - write 3169.9 MB/sec read 2978.1 MB/secDisadvantages:The HyperDrive Next USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure gets very hot during prolonged use. If you have a plan to download a lot of small files from the internet to it and the whole operation will take 5-6 hours (like me from Australia) then get ready for the HyperDrive to be almost impossible to hold in your hands after this operation due to the temperature.I have noticed random disk shutdowns on MAC. For some unknown reason, the drive randomly shuts down after an unspecified amount of time. If you pull out the USB-C cable and plug it back in, everything starts working again. Therefore, I cannot recommend this device for purchase.Or be ready for unpleasant surprises right away.P.S.I will have to try how Kingston Fury Renegade M.2 NVMe SSD (2280) 4TB will behave in HyperDrive Next USB4 NVMe SSD Enclosure - after the experiments I will try not to forget to report back.

I would like to add another disappointing news - today I tried to transfer 200GB from internal disk to HyperDrive Next USB4 NVMe SSD.

On MAC M3 MAX - as a result, halfway through the process I got an error - The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100083). Disconnected and reconnected HyperDrive Next USB4 NVMe SSD and when trying to continue copying after about 30 seconds I got the same message (The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100083). I don't know what causes this error. Controller or USB-C cable. But I am using the cable that came with the HyperDrive Next USB4 NVMe SSD

Today when trying to upload to disk - 16GB - I got another error - "The operation can't be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code 100083)".So in my understanding - these solutions cannot be recognized as reliable. Maybe it is a mistake in my copies of HyperDrive Next USB4 NVMe SSD. But I doubt it. If you have an opportunity - take variants with a fan, for additional cooling.

p.s.

I would like to add that during this time I found and updated drivers for Asmedia ASM2464 NVME/USB 4.x Controller Firmware Version 231204_85_00_00_00 - but unfortunately it still didn't change the situation.

I am also having a similar issue. I'm a DJ and I use Serato DJ Pro. I have owned the M1 Pro, M2 Pro, and now the M3 MAX and this is the first time I'm having any hard drive issue. Ive had the Same External SSD drive for all machines (Sabrent SSD). I thought it was possible that maybe the drive was old and going out so I got a brand new ACASIS thunderbolt 3/4 drive paired with a samsung 980 pro 2TB. However this did not fix any issues. When loading songs within Serato DJ, the hard drive will still randomly Eject the hard drive and give me an err message saying the drive was not Ejected properly.

I'm not sure what to do as I can't afford for this to happen in front of hundreds of people. Please Helpppp

I am having the exact same problem. All of a sudden, my brand new Mac Pro M3 starts ejecting my (brand new) SSDs. But what’s strange is that it doesn’t always eject them, just get the bubble that says Disk not ejected properly, but icon of drive still on desktop. It has corrupted my HUGE Final Cut Pro project. Thank god I had a back up, but now what do I do? I exchanged my brand new computer for a, BRAND NEW COMPUTER because I don’t have time to waste. Do I dare try new computer?? I’m afraid it will ruin my projects beyond repair. Is it only the M3? Or are M2s having same problem? What IS the problem? I have to use my 2019 13” to repair everything. What the heck??

my Mac book pro I bought in Jan 2024 is dated November 2023.

Not sure if it's related:

Macbook Pro M3 Max on MacOS Sonoma Version 14.4.1 (23E224)

I have several external hard drives and the ones with a usb-c connection connect with no problem to my M3 Max .

My Crucial 4tb SSD with a Usb-c connection also has no problem.

The ones with a USB-A connection that have to connect using a dongle that converts to USB-c are not appearing either on System Information nor on Disk Utility. (tried both a Ugreen and an Original Apple USB-a to USB-C dongle)

It only connects when using a Satechi Multiport Adapter.

Hey so I think I am having a similar issue... only it is manifesting in slightly different ways. External Sandisk Pro-G40 SSD sometimes connects as thunderbolt, sometimes connects only as USB 3.1... all ports have the issue. It matters for my use, because I am streaming music instrument samples from it, and it may be causing Logic Pro AND Finder to random hang/crash. Finder crashes... unreal right?

It also hangs/crashes when I attempt to disconnect the drive.

The 3rd Party company who makes the music instrument samples I am using analyzed some of my crash reports. They say that their program "was busy scanning volumes when the crash sample was taken. It is a really strange report, though - it looks like the filesystem is stuck reading something, perhaps from a drive that got disconnected"

I am not a software expert. I'm a pro music creative. But I am sensing thing something is seriously wrong with Apple's ports, so much show that it causes Finder to crash, or in your case, it cannot even find the internal drive on your M3 machine!

I'm on a M3 Max as well.

I too am having the same issue and it's only been a week since my upgrade... Both my SSD drives are intermittently being read which never happened on my old 2020 MacBook Pro. Eventually the disk utility will go to a loading screen, which I have to restart to fix or pull out the drive and plug them into another computer to fix the "errors". Surely this can't be right for these new MacBooks that cost a small fortune?? I'm hoping a USB hub will fix this, but I am shocked. Has anyone here contacted Apple about this yet?

I am having similar issues my 2021 iMac. It works, then it doesn't. It sees the disk in the System Information but not in finder (yes I have external hard drive checked). When I bought the new computer it only came with thunderbolt connections and I had to buy and adapter to plug my external hard drive in. The adapter may be the problem because I have checked everything else. It works then it doesn't. Most recently I couldn't boot up my computer, it would go to a black screen and do nothing. I found if I disconnected the hard drive it worked. This is the latest complication and never happened for 2 years which makes me believe that something in an apple update is messing with me. I can mount this no problem on our Linux machine and I don't have my old MacBook Pro with me to see if it would work there. I have actually mounted it to the Linux machine then reconnected to my iMac and it comes back but not consistently. This is extremely frustrating as I had to move my backed up files of Amazon to Google and they didn't make it there for some reason leaving all my backups on old school USB driven hard drives. AppleCare was unhelpful as I finally figured out how to get my computer booted by removing it. This is basic stuff, why Apple keeps messing with me on backup is beyond me. I can't even clean up iCloud as it says it is full of messages but I deleted them and it still says it is full. This keeps happening every few months and I am not a kid who text a million people a day. I am going to freak out on someone. I spent a small fortune on the newer computer and it has been so problematic or maybe it is Apple causing the issues.
