How to clear Autofill in Safari on macOS?
Using macOS 14.2.1
Safari 17.2.1
MacBook Pro 16-inch, 2019
This is a question about ‘Autofill’ in Safari (I think).
I have been using this bank’s website successfully for years.
Previously, I would open an instance of Safari.
In the url, I would type (as an example): “bankname.com”.
This would autofill to: “https://www.bankname.com/credit/welcome.do?exp=&lang=en&redirect=directTrafficsec” and everything worked as expected.
But just a few days ago the bank added a new ‘feature’, and now I am unable to use their website.
Now after clicking on “bankname.com” I get a pop-up window that says ‘you are being redirected to a third party website, continue or go back? No matter which choice I make nothing happens.
I contacted the bank’s helpline. They claim that this is an autofill problem on my side because their actual homepage is using a different url even though they say it is “bankname.com” Their position is that the bug is on my side and I just need to go fix it.
Since I really wasn’t sure what specific action I should take, I used the ‘shotgun’ approach.
I made the following changes:
Safari > Settings > AutoFill > unchecked all of the AutoFill web forms.
Safari > settings > privacy > website data > manage website data > remove all cookies, confirm, done
Safari > History > clear history > confirm
Safari > Settings > Web Sites > Pop Up Windows > Block all pop-ups for currently open windows and configured web sites
Safari > Settings > Advanced > Privacy > checked Block All Cookies
I closed out of Safari and then rebooted the computer.
The problem:
Now when I open Safari (without specifying any particular url), it defaults to the fully expanded url as noted above with the message: “Safari can’t open the page. Too many redirects occurred trying to open: ~see expanded url as noted above~. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which is then redirected to open the original page.”
Any recommendations are appreciated.
