Why is messages running in the background

I we in settings under battery that messages is running in the background and I am wondering why. I have googled this questions and whether it is aske here or on Reddit or anywhere no one seems to answer the question. They just say to restart ur phone or turn off background refresh. I understand why some apps have to run in the background but I don’t understand why messages does.

Message App Running on Background I don't use the Message app (I even have it "not allowed" on screen time), and yet, I find it is being used on background (for instance, it seems that it was already used for 1 minute today; 1 minute on screen which my be my checking for activity, and 1 minute on background). Losing iMessage when leaving screen before sendingbefore Where does an unfinished iMessage go if you leave the screen?
