Beware of emails from support@icloud.com

This post is a caution to all readers about tricks used by scammers.

I have been using emails for a very long time, and this is the first time I got scammed, although I don't know yet what exactly was the purpose of the email I received, and the consequences of my clicking on the link it contained.

I got an email, purportedly from support@icloud.com:

This wasn't actually from support@icloud.com, instead it was from support@icioud.com.

The 'i' in the sender's email address showed up as 'l' in Apple Mail, as you can see in the screenshot above.

I have posted the details in this post.

Remember that emails from Apple will have *.apple.com, NOT *.icloud.com. But if *.icioud.com can be made to look like *.icloud.com, so can *.appie.com be made to look like *.apple.com. Or some other domain can be made to look like official domain (email spoofing).

LESSON LEARNT

If there is an email relating to security of your account, even if it appears to be from an authentic ID, NEVER click on the link given in the email. Always type in the domain name of the service provider manually, and login to your account to ensure everything is fine.

MYSTERY

The link in the email redirected me to the official iCloud.com site, so I wonder what the purpose of the email was.

  1. What was the sender trying to get from me?
  2. What did my clicking on the link do?
  3. Was the sender simply trying to get my IP address (and other details)?
