Universal Control Randomly Disconnects - Solution

Hi Everyone,

I think I finally found a solution to the universal control issues that have been plaguing all of us. This issue randomly started last week and I was scouring the internet since then. I just happened to try this and it seems to be working. It seems to be the incoming connection firewall setting for universal control.

  1. Go to settings - Network - Firewall - Options.
  2. Find the "Universal Control" in incoming connections.
  3. Click on Universal Control to highlight the row.
  4. Click the minus sign to remove the connection.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Restart the computer.

After you restart and move your iPad near the MacBook, universal control fires up normally and the universal control incoming connection reappears in the network settings.

Give this a try. It worked for me.

Thank you for the feedback. My universal control disconnected again out of nowhere this morning. I tried all of the software tricks, but nothing worked, so I went into the engineering specs for these stupid machines. The WiFi antenna for the iPad is next to the camera and the WiFi antenna for my MacBook is on the back right. It turns out I was blocking my iPad antenna! Once I shifted my iPad such that I had a direct line of sight without the monitor getting in the way, it reconnected and hasn’t dropped since. It may just be an interference issue.

Just went through these steps (my own post about the issue is somewhere around here today). This seems to have fixed it for now. I will try manipulating interface on Music app on the laptop and see if it triggers the disconnect. Arggggh.....it did...hitting the play button on Music on the laptop breaks the UC link to the laptop. The preference setting just won't stick.
