iPhone 15 Books last played; not updating in iTunes

iPhone 15 Books app "last played" not updating in iTunes

In Dec 23 I upgraded from a 6s to a 15. Now Books "last played" are not updated in iTunes, breaking smart playlists. Music works fine.

Versions; PC (version 10.0.19045.3930) iTunes (12.13.1) and the phone (iOS 17.2.1) are all up to date and have gone through several updates during this time. The only changes I know of are iOS 15 to 17 and phone 6s to 15.

Is there a way for me to query the phone to check what the "last played" date/time is for a given audiobook? Do you have any other ideas to see if the problem is on the phone side or the iTunes side with the Books last played not updating?
