I am creating a photo file on my desktop. Originally, it was drag and drop, and was moving through the photo file of over 2600 photos. I have only added maybe, maybe, 50 photos to the file when it quit letting me add more photos? Is there a size limit? Why would this stop?
I need to create a large file as I sort the photos and classify. Is there a better way of this?

+1 to using Apple Photos: macOS - Photos - Apple.
However, if you aren't able to add more items to your current folder, your Mac's startup disk might be getting full. To check, choose the Apple menu (top left) > About This Mac > Storage.

Use the Photos app to manage your photo library and organize the images into defined albums. Photos organized into albums can be labeled and exported as necessary.

If not the Photos app, then maybe another photo library manager such as Adobe Lightroom or...?
thank you. I will use photos app per your suggestions. I have plenty of disk space and thought it would be easier to build in off-photos file? All my photos backed in Icloud. Computer has over 400gb free space.
