Why are images reduced in size when dragged from photo to my desktop?

My system is updated and running fine. I have never noticed this before. I dragged images from Photos to my desktop and the file size is reduced quite a bit. For example, a photo shows 6 MB in Photos, but after being dragged to my desktop, its size is 1.9 MB.

I tried with multiple images and I'm getting the same results. Anyone else encounter this?

I'm going to assume that these are jpeg files.

The reason is that when you drag from the Photos window to the desktop what you get is the Photos preview of the image. This is a compressed good-enough-for-most-things version of your image. If you hold the option key and drag you will get a copy of the original file you imported.

For more export options use the File -> Export command. The Jpeg quality setting that dialogue will allow you to export large files.
