I have a huge playlist (12k+ tracks) but occasionally there is a song which is in my library on my pc but doesn't appear to have synched to my iphone.
When i try to find the song it as a down arrow next to it but I am NOT a subscriber to apple music.
When i try to play the song, which is in itunes, it skips to the next or another track on my iphone.
Why does this happen? Apparently all tracks are synched to my phone.
I believe that the reference to 13565 is the total number of items (songs and other media, such as Podcasts) that iTunes is managing on your iPod, while the 12580 figure is the number of items that iTunes is dealing with at this specific Sync. Compare your view with mine showing what iTunes says as my iPod was being synchronised:
Notice that iTunes reports that it is copying 18 items, but the Sync Music figure is 4179 songs. So the number of songs iTunes is managing on my iPod is 4,179, but iTunes is only working on 18 songs at this time. That may be updating a Playlist, or synchronising other information such as changed song rating, last played time, etc. Don't forget, a Sync means exactly that; synchronising, or making the same. That includes information about the song itself, not simply adding it to a device.
When I check the iPod's Settings/About>Songs, the figure is 4,198 (complete with comma this time). The discrepancy is due to other items, such as Podcasts etc. I would take those figures with a pinch of salt, they never make sense to me and I've tried to understand them over many years.
If a song is listed on your iPod, but with a cloud with arrow in it, that means that it is not downloaded to your iPod, but it is a song you have purchased from the iTunes Store. The U2 album Songs of Innocence is listed on my iPod like this. That's because it's in my iTunes Store account as a purchase (even though I didn't purchase it - it was an unwanted gift from Apple and U2), but I have chosen to not download it to my iPod. Tap the download arrow to download the song. Better still, make sure that you download those purchases to your iTunes Library and then let iTunes add them to the iPod from there.
Don't worry about Apple Music.
To be honest, as the song is not purchased from the iTunes Store I'm not sure what that symbol means. The majority of my music is not iTunes Store purchases either, but none of mine are displayed like that.
Have you tried tapping the arrow to see whether it reveals anything? Also, the three-dot (ellipsis) is almost certainly a menu option. What does that reveal when you tap it?

That is a known bug, so perhaps that is what happened. The bug has been with us for several years and Apple doesn't seem to be in a hurry to fix it.
Thank you for that. Just noting it is a current model iphone rather than an ipod. The number of items makes sense.
I resynched all of the music and the specific missing track is now there and playable but it still has the down-arrow. The song was not purchased from itunes and I do not have apple Music. Previously it showed the same but was not playable. If I tried to play it it would skip to a next track.
It doesn't appear to do anything. Tapping the down arrow does nothing. The three-dots just have options to delete, add to playlist, next, favourite etc.
I guess more research required. I still don't understand what happened in the first place to show the song but not be able to play it. I presume not all of the songs had copied over.
btw yes, running latest versions of everything.

Yes methinks so too. iTunes has many bugs but Apple no longer seems interested in it.
