Where do I find ICLOUD PHOTOS storage

Just leaned my photos are now stored in ICLOUD PHOTOS STORAGE, so how do I access it to see how much space it’s using, while I’m cleaning up photos (deleting some). In order to see how much space I freed up in total of iCloud storage

iPad, iPadOS 17

You can see how your apps on your iPad use your iCloud storage by navigating Settings > [Your Name] > iCloud > Manage Account Storage

In that last screen you will see a list of apps using iCloud space and it will be ordered by the amount of space consumed.

Be aware that if you delete photos in your Photos app they will also be deleted from iCloud.

Thanks for the explanation; especially your comment that any photos deleted will also delete from iCloud! So I’ll have to buy an 2TB external storage device, because I got an Apple notification that an update can’t be installed until I make more space available. Right? I did a partial clean-up deleting a bunch of photos and unused apps (I’ll delete more as time permits), because the message remains. The majority of my storage is photos and the notes app; and I access those on a daily basis. I can’t begin to imagine the time I’d spend constantly accessing iCloud every day to access photos and notes to create my sewing/craft projects. David, any suggestions will be appreciated especially confirming if I’m on the right track or not.

The first suggestion that comes to mind is to get more iCloud space in the next iCloud+ plan up from the one you have. This would achieve two things: It would preserve your photos on iCloud and, secondly, it would save you a lot of time messing about with trying to fit your collection in a space currently too small for your purpose.

is this something you might consider?

Just thought of something. You said (“Be aware that if you delete photos in your Photos app they will also be deleted from iCloud.”) any photos deleted from photos app would also delete them from iCloud. So what is the actual benefit to using cloud. I thought it was an off site storage that stuff would be safe to remain there, that is why I do pay for extra cloud storage space—-but if they get deleted from it when deleting from iPad, what good is that? I only want to delete from iPads not iCloud. Doesn’t make sense to me. Please clarify when time permits. I just need more space to download ANOTHER weekly apple upgrade (that always takes away something that actually works and gives me no new & improved benefit). I appreciate your feedback

Benefits of having an iCloud+ account have to be decided by the user.

It should not be thought of as a repository, and indeed Apple markets it for several uses, including iOS backups for restoration (your iPad probably does this too), data for Apps, HomeKit video storage, iCloud Photos, iCloud Drive and a syncing service - among other uses. See What is iCloud+? - Apple Support for more detail.

Regarding your specific query, the photos uploaded to iCloud Photos from your iPad are or can be shared with your other devices and repose in iCloud for safe keeping. You can also choose to have small version of your photos - essentially thumbnail copies - to save space on your device, yet have them available in full size on iCloud for downloading at any time. This is an efficient way to save space on your device.

Because iCloud is a syncing service any edit, change, addition or deletion is transmitted to iCloud and then to all other participating devices. iCloud unifies your content across all your devices.

But if you decide that isn't the way you want to go, then get a couple of external drives and park your content on them. Yes, a couple of drives, because you can't risk having just one copy of content on one drive. If it should fail, and many do in the longer term, you have no other copy. I have some locally stored content on three external drives. This is a benefit of having photos on your iCloud account via the Photos app because if your iPad should fail you can download it again when you set up a replacement device, or upgrade to a new one.

I don't have an iPad so I can't advise on how to get your photos from iCloud to a drive, but I expect it would require a computer to do that and downloaded from iCloud on the web.

Hi David: thanks for your continued advice. I’ve used external storage devices for over 20 years and they do have their place. As to iPad, I do have cables & hardware to connect such devices to it, and I use a sandisk iXpand too. Maybe I’ll have to just give in (kicking & screaming) and use my HP windows-based laptop for (safe long term) storing my photos collection (I already have 1000’s of oldies songs and oldies photos on iTunes too lol). I rarely use it because I’m more familiar with my iPad, and can stuff it in my bag and off I go. Now I guess my best choices are: backup to external devices, my laptop or increase iCloud capacity. I do like your idea of storing thumbnails on iPad , then I can go full size when working with them in Notes. I’m trying to use the most efficient and easiest ways to keep up, as a 78 y.o. lady getting by in “The future is here now”! But I do love technology & often ask where was it in the 60’s, then I remember those guys with big ideas weren’t around then!! Have a super day!
