Solved: Apple TV 4K & Samsung TV Volume Control Problem
January 2024 - I was frustrated recently with my brand new 4K Apple TV box because of a possible hardware flaw.
Problem: The supplied remote worked well with my Samsung TV for 3 weeks, and then all of a sudden, it wouldn’t control the volume anymore. It would, however, control the TV power on and off.
Here’s what I tried at first (all failed): unplugged the Apple TV from power and HDMI connections, tried an LG TV, replaced the HDMI cord, checked to ensure the TV(s) were set up for the HDMI CEC communication, and lastly, tried “Learn New Device.” Lastly, I tried resetting the Apple TV box altogether—losing my entire configuration in the process. I reinstalled all of my apps afterward.
Okay, so here’s what finally corrected the problem. Credit to a user in another forum at the following link:

How to Restart Siri Remote and Apple TV Remote
- Press and hold the TV button and the Volume Down button at the same time. Keep holding both buttons for about five seconds, or until the status light on your Apple TV turns off and on again.
- Release both buttons, then wait five to 10 seconds for a Connection Lost notification to appear in the corner of your TV screen.
- Wait while the remote restarts. You should see the Connected remote notification appear on the screen, after which you can use your remote again.
There you go! Back to normal
