Iphone Chat and Internet Notifications

Hi, i just got a 15 pro max (first time ios user) and I observed that the phone does not respond to ping from my router when the screen is locked. I read somewhere from the community that this is how iphones are designed, it will turn off wifi radio when screen is locked as a battery saving feature. While i was on my home wifi, i did a continous ping from my home router, it timed out when i locked the screen (no cellular data).. i gues at this point it is no longer getting internet connection.. but when i send a chat message to my facebook mesenger or google chat or anything that requires internet, i still get those messages in my iphone and my iphone starts to respond to ping. Does anyone have any idea how this thing works? Does iphone silently or ocassionally connects to the internet gateway to check if there are notifications from tour apps? Just curious.

iOS has a feature called "Push Notifications" that allows certain apps to maintain a persistent connection to their servers. This allows them to receive updates and notifications even when the device is in a locked state.

Apps like Facebook Messenger and Google Chat can still receive and deliver notifications even when the screen is locked. This is achieved through a combination of methods:

  1. Background App Refresh: iPhones allow apps to periodically background refresh in the background. This refresh interval varies and is controlled by the phone and app settings. During these brief refreshes, apps can check for notifications and update their content.
  2. Push Notifications: Many apps, including Messenger and Chat, utilize push notifications. These notifications are delivered directly to the phone by Apple's Push Notification Service regardless of the phone's current connection state. As long as the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular data connectivity at some point, it can receive and display these notifications.

Certain settings like "Low Power Mode" can further restrict background app refresh and notifications, impacting their delivery when locked.

If the push notication server sends a notification to a device, it will be through the internet right since the device is remote..

So it contradicts when the iphone screen is locked where it turns off the wifi for battery saving. (No cellular data).. this means no connection to the outside world.

Unless.. the wifi occasionally checks on a specific interval like every 5 to 10 minutes it checks outside to sync notifications like a brief keep alive session. But this will lead to delayed notifications when theres no connectivity outside ... am i correct with my assumption?
