Mail stopped working on 2012 MacBookPro, is there a fix?

Suddenly, my husband's otherwise functional 2012 MacBook Pro stopped letting him send or receive email from his AT&T/Yahoo account. (He can still do so on his IPhone and IMac or by using mail.yahoo.com). After a maddening series of calls to both companies (unsurprisingly, each blamed the other), we called Apple tech support, where we were told that the age of his Mac was likely the cause. It's running OS Catalina 10.15.7, and can't be upgraded further. Any workarounds, or do we just bite the bullet and buy a new one?

Many of the major email provider companies that have always offered Some additional security around their email accounts, have recently tightened up security. NOW, you can no longer log in with just a username and password.

So you may have to set the account up again, paying close attention to the required protocols they demand. typically a web browser window opens and you continue in an encrypted web browser connection. Safari older than version 9 ( (the default in 10.11 El Capitan) is inadequate, and may require a newer computer.

Thanks, but I did set up the Yahoo account again, verifying user name and I.D. and updating password, and the log-in info was accepted and works on my husband's IMac and IPhone -- but not on his MacBook Pro, even though its OS is up to date as it can be, and so is Safari (version 16.6.1). AT&T says they've done all they can, and Yahoo says there's nothing they can do. So it looks like a new MacBook is the only solution, right?
