What version of macOS did you upgrade from?

If you were using macOS 10.14 Mojave or earlier, then the problem is likely that your older 32-bit programs were incompatible with Big Sur. Starting with 10.15 Catalina, only 64-bit software works on the Mac. Users need to find 64-bit macOS compatible updates from the app publisher of find software to replace what can't be updated.

If this is your situation, you might have a look at Libre Office as a replacement for Word.

Microsoft has ended support for their Office apps under Big Sur. They are only supporting the three most recent releases of macOS; 12 Monterey, 13 Ventura and 14 Sonoma. This makes getting and activating a version of Word that is compatible with Big Sur just a little more difficult.
