Where do photos that are downloaded from onedrive (ipad pro, latest os) go?

Forgive me, however I am totally new to Apple products and iOS. When I open my OneDrive app, I can see and navigate the current content. As a photographer, I wanted download the photo to the iPad pro. I am given the option to download which the file does. How do I find these downloaded files. Other help questions went how to go to the "blue folder app" and there it should be. It's not. Not on my iCloud drive (don't want that) and not in "On My iPad". That folder only shows "Chrome" --nothing there and "Move to iOS" in which a grey folder advises me "Folder is empty". I did a search for "downloads" which returned nothing. I held my tap longer and that gave me the option to download to "Pictures". I found "Pictures" and there is the file replicated 4 additional times. I can't even find a way to navigate the file system like in the finder or in "My PC, drive x, users, me. I am at a total loss here. This is the only Apple product I own. I don't want it syncing to iCloud because there is no need, with just one Apple product.

I did a little testing with OneDrive on my iPhone and iPad. (I had loaded it there some time ago but not used it much for photographs.)

Inside the OneDrive app, "Add to Album" refers to OneDrive albums, not Photos app albums. If I understand correctly, you want to get your photos into the Photos library.

For me, the "Download" icon on a photo in the Files portion of OneDrive copies the photo to the Photos library. The first time I did that, I was asked to give OneDrive permission to access my Photos library, which I gave. Did you ever go through that step?

The app, Photos, is usually used for pictures. It's great at organizing pictures, and it has editing tools that, though not Lightroom, can do some pretty sophisticated stuff. (I use Mac Photos for editing; I use the iPad for portability and for looking at my favorite pictures.) While the Mac and Windows are similar designs, the iPad and iPhone require a different paradigm.

The Mac has apps that work on files stored in the Finder. Windows is similar. But files on the iPad are mostly stored within the apps. On my Mac I have folders of music that different apps can access. On the iPad there is a Music app, but you won't really find the music files anyplace. It's way simpler for most users, with much less chance for people to mess things up. But it's an entirely different model to follow.

Photos is a non-destructive editor, so you can play around a bit with the pictures and always go back to the original. People who like touchscreens do lots of editing on the iPad. As an organizer, Photos allows you to put the same pictures in several albums without taking up any more space. The albums are "lists" of pictures in the Photos Library. Deleting a picture from an album, for instance, doesn't remove it from the library, it just removes it from the list. "Recents" is a special album that shows all the pictures in Photos in the order in which they were imported.

The best thing is probably to get comfortable with Photos and albums. It's a very powerful tool.

I did select another image within OneDrive downloaded it, selected it after I knew I was looking at the downloaded copy, not the one within OneDrive cloud, tapped it and a list came up with something to the equivalent of "Open in another app". Of course I could use Kindle, Notes, Facebook, etc., but the photos app was not there. However there was "Save to Files" listed. I tapped that, and a box showed me a selection of folders within the iCloud folder and there was the location of my created "Pictures" album. Much better method. Have to be quick, but just 3 steps instead of ten or so. If it is already in the mysterious unseen "Downloads" folder, perhaps it moved it from there to photos. I'll just have to find a way to clear the hidden "downloads" folder so I can verify that it did move and cleanup the multiple copies of downloaded files. I really appreciate the time and effort you put in to helping me out. I may be able to find anything, move or clear anything in the "Win11" system, however for iOs, I am a novice. I am off to the next challenge! Tackle the "Downloads" issue and then find a way the "picture widget" sees my photos. Thank you again!

I created a "Pictures" folder in the file app alongside "Documents". I went back into "Photos" I chose a new picture to save, download it and it filled the screen, as it should. Exited OneDrive" I was able to finally see the photo in "Recents". I was able to select it there and "copy" it into the newly-created "Pictures" album where it was now visible.

It's a bit of a convoluted route and if I open other stuff it will vanish from "Recents", so it has to be repeated. Plus I am duplicating files.

I have no idea how to get that original out of wherever it went when I downloaded it. I guess I could look in settings for a "cleanup" aka Win11's "Settings" app, tap on "storage", "Temporary Files" where among other things you have the opportunity to clear the "Downloads" folder. I guess I'll have to wait for a low space warning.

The upshot is I still don't know where original file downloaded went to. For some reason this iPad Pro I got in August does not have a native "Pictures" or "Downloaded" folders and only "Desktop" and "Documents".

If this is the way I have to do it, that's it. I have no "simple" way to find the downloaded files nor delete the originals. Heck, I can't even find the content for the little widget that rotates pictures and other stuff. Grey screen to a black one that kindly informs me there is no content available. I don't know where it pulls pictures from". That will be another nightmare to figure out.

For me this is a totally alien environment. Maybe that's the way your supposed to do it. I love the iPad Prom it's great with the photos you are absolutely right, but this long method is going to take a while to get used to. If it's this complex, (for me) I'll just forget it. I am totally lost or totally unable to grasp the iOS system and the way it is organized. All this in search of a simple "Downloads" and "Picture" next to "Documents" folder they apparently did not include when I upgraded to the latest OS. The rest of the apps are super easy to use, switch install, etc.

I use an iPad, but I don't use OneDrive, so I may not be much help. Of course, contacting the OneDrive people would make sense, since they are the ones who chose where to put them.

I don't know what "blue folder app" means, but maybe the Files app? I get there by sliding down from the top of the home screen to open the search field and typing "Files."

Selecting it shows the Files folder with all kinds of junk that has accumulated there:

These things may be transferred there by apps on my Mac or from externally connected drives, etc.

But when I use my Nikon, the pictures go wirelessly to the Photos app.

The iPad is a really gorgeous way to view and show pictures, by the way.

Right! An iPad with OneDrive. When I do a long press on a picture, it does nothing. A quick tap brings up a grey bar which only for a second or two with the "Add to Album" "Edit" "Delete" "Download" and "more". "More" gives me "Create Photo Album" "Make Available Offline" "Move" "Rename" "Details" or "Open in another App". At this point I am still within "OneDrive" app which is a blue cloud. I don't want anything else so I exit the app.

I have already downloaded the file as one of the options, but now I have no idea where the "downloaded" file is. That's the problem. (In my case multiple copies of it). I have no idea where to look for the location they went to. Everyone says "Go to the Files" app and it should be right there next to "Documents" or "Desktop". Its not.

You're right. It's been subzero here and I finally had some time to really get to know the iPad. Thanks for that tip on albums being folders of lists not images. In Win11 its one. Delete a picture out of an album/folder and its gone. I think I understand how the OS "works" better. I've been on a MacBook Air once in a time and always Win11, I was in the "Finder"/"File Explorer" mindset, and I carried that to iOS. Android is more distantly similar to Win11 than iOS with file structure. Thanks for the tip on the non-destructive nature of Photos. I'll be much more comfortable working with it. You're right, it wont stand up against Lightroom/Photoshop--those for something more intensive anyway. Android's not so friendly with your photo options and you do lose (if not set to copy/keep) the original you're out of luck. Thank you!

Here's my take after using Apple Iphone 14 and Apple tablet now for a year. THEY DO NOT WANT YOU USING ONEDRIVE (it's a Microsoft Product). Anytime I download any file or picture from my OneDrive it dissapears, can't be found anywhere on the device. Believe me I've spent hours and hours looking through files, directories etc on the iphone to no avail. You have to Save the photo as file, rename it and put it a file directory...NOTE: Apple will not merge photos into your camera or photos. It's just a fact of life, the two companies despise each other and they don't play well together.
