Retouch in photos app not working on macbook pro

The Retouch in my photos app not working on my macbook pro 2020 running Sonoma 14.2.1. This is a recent development, perhaps when I upgraded to Sonoma. When I try to remove something from the photo instead of "erasing" the object, I get a black box covering the area. I have tried using the option-click, I have tried not using the option-click, I have changed sizes of the circle, which just makes the box bigger. I have tried it on RAW files and jpeg files. I am including 2 photos showing the circle before I try to remove the twig next to the lemur's eye and after when the box shows up. Before this happened, I did have some trouble with ghost images when I tried to remove something in high contrast areas, but could mostly work around that. Can someone help me with this current problem?
