Where do expired Apple Cash payments go?

Others have asked this question but I haven't found a satisfactory answer to any of those previously asked questions. I understand that expired Apple Cash payments I've sent will be returned to me, but my question is, to exactly where will they be returned? My Apple Cash card? My bank account? I haven't found that question answered in these forums nor in Apple's article about how Apple Cash works. That article doesn't even mention expired payments, let alone say where they're returned *to*. Do I have to watch my Apple Cash card balance to know when I can put the money back into my bank account, or will it be returned to my bank account without my doing anything?
