Slideshow without iDVD

I use Roxio Toast that can make videos and slide shows that play well on any DVD player. All you have to do is drag the photos into the app and click burn. You can add titles and backgrounds for the menu as needed.

I've investigated three apps:

1 - Photo Slideshow - DVD Slideshow: not as intuitive as iDVE but has many transitions to choose from and will take both photos and videos. The free version adds a watermark to the DVD. The full version is $20 at the App Store.

2 - DVD Maker Lite - DVD Creator. It has a plainer interface than the first one but will also take photos and videos to crate a video DVD. X The app costs $15 at the App Store.

There'e one more I've looked at briefly, DVD Creator Pro - Video Movie Burn to DVD Lite, but it only takes videos. If you can create the videos in Photos, export them to DVD Creator Pro - Video Movie Burn to DVD Lite it might be for you. Haven't worked with it at all.

I can't say as I've never used Roxio Toast. I used iDVD quite a bit and now use DVD Maker Lite - DVD Creator. It's not nearly as intuitive as iDVD but gives me the menu backgrounds I like and will take both movie and still photo files. It does nearly everything iDVD can do but not as easily or intuitively. And it's only $15. Just my own opinion and what I'm used to.

You need an app that can burn a video DVD. The Finder is not one of them. There're some inexpensive apps at the App Store. Just search for "video DVD". Many have demo versions that will create a video DVD with a watermark over the movie. The paid version removes the watermark.

Most apps will let you burn the project to "iso" (which is the same as a disk image - .dmg) to try it out before you commit to disc.

True, iDVD was killed about 10 years ago or so.

I recommend doing some due diligence in the Mac App Store and also just Googling to find some third party apps that do what you want. The Photos app (it's preinstalled on your Mac) has a slide show feature and you can export the slide shows too.

There are alternatives to iDVD, too.

Keynote from Apple can create a Slide Show and even export to .mov format which can be used in QuickTime Player

The same Keynote application can also export to PowerPoint format for use on MS Windows computers

No. That was what iDVD was for. You'll need to export the project from the Photos library as a movie file and then add that to the app that can create and burn a video DVD.

You are correct but Toast has many more features that you may or may not need. You can look at the site and see the features and make a call.
