automatic clock: time, zone, date not working

I have been using my macbook pro just fine since having the display replaced following an encounter with the floor. But today... I noticed the time was wrong. It was set to december 20 2023. So I set about fixing it. The zone was wrong... set that but it wasn't online so I connected to wifi. Still nope. Some things now work, many do not. I am only able to get in here now after resetting the time manually... which is weird that approach worked. I mean if something is wrong it ought to be broken more consistently, no?

Either way... restarting did nothing. I have checked and corrected any missing things... like I made sure location services were on for all necessary apps etc. I am in need of updating but I am a nomad so I have to wait for landline wifi for things like that.

Oh... and when I could get to apple website, it said my account had been locked. No idea why unless my attempts to bring up the site with bad clock triggered something.

So... I can use everything with the manual set... but it is weird, yes? It is also weird that the support articles out there don't include anything about what to try if the clock isn't working right. Only has info on how to just turn on auto set or set manually.

there is an extremely slim possibility that you have encountered a VERY obscure problem that has been reported a tiny number of times before. That issue is related to the PRESENTATION of the time to you, and not actual Time-keeping. It involves Language & Region control panel.

to fix, open Language&Region control panel.

change the Region setting there to something unusual for you.

(ex: if in Americas- US, select Europe- UK -- or the reverse)

close the window and save changes.

Open the Language&Region control panel again

change to the setting you wish for the long term.

close the window and save changes.

Test and report your results.

It wasn't offering me a choice of options of topics that fit what I needed. It took me in circles of options that weren't relevant so when I saw size again I just grabbed it so I could stop the absurdity. I honestly haven't measured the macbook pro and don't know if it is 13 or 13.5... I don't expect the exact size of macbook in inches is the cause of the clock problem.

I am running Ventura 13.5.7 - and have been slow updating because

  • I live mobile, so no dedicated wifi... only hotspot 120GB which is more than enough for most needs... but not ideal for giant and slow OS upgrades. Being on solar power doesn't help with that either. The macbook is an energy hog

  • I am a pwd and apple isn't scoring high on genuine accessibility. The features are not great... So, I avoid updates as long as possible. Imagine needing speech to text for all your typing and the option you have just randomly makes up words. Now imagine the frequent updates disrupting what does work

None of that explains why my auto update for the clock isn't working or how to fix it.
