14.3 Mail.app - Corrupted/Garbled Text When Composing Messages

After updating to 14.3, I've noticed Mail.app messages (replies or new) will begin garbling and corrupting text display while you're writing (similar to writing in this field here). Usually when you've written a few paragraphs, the prior (or even current) text will garble with previous content, moving it around, erasing some, or even overlaying it with a previous paragraph.

Importantly, the text itself is not changed, as can be seen if you just ignore it and keep typing. However, if you stop and try to select the text, it cannot be grabbed, since it's not really there. It is a visual corruption only, but when you don't know what you have written, it's hard to confirm what's, well, written.

I've restarted, as well as reinstalled the OS with no change.

This is while Mail is in fullscreen and the message is using split-screen.

There clearly seems to be a text display bug (graphics or WebKit perhaps), but I'm trying to determine if it's just me or others are noticing it as well. I will also file a bug (Feedback Assistant) on the issue.

Yes, I am experiencing this very annoying problem when editing in Apple Mail. I have a new M3 Pro running the latest MacOS Sonoma 14.3. This had not occurred before the OS upgrade, a few days ago. I was worried that something was wrong with the M3 Pro hardware. However, I see other posts here that indicate the problem is not isolated to Apple Silicon, and seems to have surfaced right after the upgrade to MacOS 14.3.

And it seems to be isolated to Apple Mail so far. It makes it nearly impossible to compose longer e-mail messages. I may have to switch to another Mail app until Apple fixes this really bad bug.

Yes, it's in the display part of the code. I've found that I can force a redisplay to remove the garbled overwritten text by using the Mail Format tab, and then selecting either rich text or plain text, which forces a screen refresh to show all the typing I thought was lost. Otherwise, I can't see the text I'm typing!

It's actually horrible, making Apple mail message editing unusable. I'm ready to switch to MS Outlook to see if that helps.

Come on Apple! This is completely unacceptable. Fix the problem!

Thanks for doing this with Apple Support. I also reinstalled the OS to no effect (because it's an OS/WebKit issue, not a random glitch on my installation). If I have some time, I may bite the bullet and suffer this as well.

Has anyone noticed if this issue occurs after installing the latest Safari beta (not Technology Preview), as this should replace the system's WebKit version (where Tech Preview runs separately).

Same here. MacBook Air M1 2020. Upon updating to Sonoma 14.3 (which I had to do because suddenly Netflix wouldn't work unless I did), Mail and Safari both keep "flashing" several lines of text that are what I typed already. It will display the "wrong" text on both sides of the cursor, but it hasn't *really* replaced the text. If I get the screen to resize or otherwise "disrupt" the display it will improve. It's even happening right now in a chatsupport.apple.com window.

At the same time, about 50% of the time I'm trying to visit websites, Safari says "can't display page because you aren't connected to the internet" even though I am connected to the internet. Another person right next to me on a different brand of computer is having no issues.

I hope someone also looks into what's going on between Apple and Netflix that FORCES people to update their OS to the latest version when they aren't even very far behind. Users should have the option of waiting until an OS update has been out for awhile before updating their OS.

I didn't install the safari beta but I did turn on lockdown mode on my Mac and restarted. Then I tried to see if it would happen in mail typing many paragraphs but it didn't happen. Not sure if this helps or if you were using lockdown mode. I only tried one email though so will have to see if this makes any difference. I wasn't using lockdown mode when this text issue kept happening. I am using a 2018 Mac mini Intel model.

Guys, for what's it worth spent a week with Apple on this and the community figured it out before them (lost a week of my time). Two thoughts, I did turn off the Auto suggest in Keyboard (and does help a bit, does it get rid of it, it does not, but it kicks in a bit later in the text.

Next Hack, I compose my emails in Text Edit and then copy and paste since as you guys know once it gets garbled you are clicking in and out of the mail app to get it to correct and that is both annoying and time consuming, so writing in text edit does at least solve that. Don't waste your time on new user, plist any of that stuff, nothing helped. I am sure they will have a fix at some point. I have two other Mac minis with 14.2 as well so that does save me a bit. At least we know we are all not crazy :)

Just had this issue also occur with a long text I was writing in iMessage on Mac where all of a sudden the beginning parts became garbled and wrote over the original text. Except unlike the email, when I tried to revive the original message it instead replaced with the garbled text, and now I can't see the full original message I was composing. Can't even Cmd Z either. Not good.

Yeah, this issue is happening to me as well; 14" M1 Macbook Pro. ANOTHER issue I just found is when I went to top menu and dropped down to 'Save', my message was SENT (and not saved) ! ! ! And of course the message wasn't finished and ready to send. Had to send a quick message to recipient apologizing for this. This issue, like the garbled / large gaps appearing randomly, should NOT be happening at this stage of 'the game'.

Identical garbled Apple Mail problem in 14.3, using a late 2021 M1 MacBook Pro. Note that I'm writing this more than 2 weeks after this issue was first reported, and still NO response from Apple. (Don't they monitor these community forums anymore?) I'm one of hundreds reporting this snafu, which has made one of the most fundamental reasons we have computers -- communicating by email -- a daily battle. Apple, if you're actually reading this, please remember that email is an essential way your customers do business. If you don't want us to take our business elsewhere, fix this already.

Hello all, thank you for your diligence in tracking down and trying to manage this nasty bug! Some good news, an update was just released for macOS (14.3.1) and iOS (17.3.1) with the changelog featuring this exact issue "text may unexpectedly duplicate or overlap while typing".

So hopefully this actually fixes it and we can get back to writing long emails without issue.
