"Encode selected video files"

I assumed this was for transcoding videos to change their size and resolution... right clicking on the files shows this dialog box:

But this is what I get - two new files, neither of which play, or is a video...

Can anybody explain what's going on?

Thanks.

I tested this with a 7.4 GB, 1 hour 7 minutes, 1920x1080 H.264 AAC .mp4 input with the same downscaling settings as you. It took 6 minutes on Mac mini 2018 and the 1.7 GB output .mov was OK.

Maybe you were too impatient and saw only temp files? And did you by chance have the input & output on an iCloud folder which has an additional network overhead?

In my experience that Services > Encode selected Video Files has been flaky at least on earlier macOS but now it seems to be better and I could not get it to fail. There are also apps like Handbrake, ShutterEncoder and ffmpeg for this task.
