"terminal" app on my new Macbook Pro
Is it appropriate that "terminal" showed up after I was working on my Macbook Pro with Carbonite? I had nothing to do with opening it because I never knew it existed.

I have been with Carbonite for awhile but when I got my new Macbook Pro they were transferring all of my files. Yes, I had such a challenge with their process, which took 2 weeks of downloading time, I was still only at 27%, they entered my computer 2X, which always makes me nervous, to deal with this challenge to find out why it was taking so long. I just decided to cancel since I had an alternative back up for my files anyway. When we finished the cancelation process I discovered this "console" and "terminal" app that was showing up that wasn't there before.
I found myself suspicious, so that was my reason for my inquiry.
I tried Carbonite over a decade ago — I could not get it off my Mac fast enough; a real resource hog back then anyway.
If no further issues then I would not be concerned.
You can always erase, and reinstall the macOS, and then your user data from a backup if you can not get past your suspicion.

Both Terminal.app and Console.app are baked in macOS application that ship with every Mac..

...part of the carbonite install process I would suspect.
And what...? is there an associated on-going issue?
Did you quit the Terminal.app does it stay closed?

Thank you so much for your reply and I am so happy that I made the right move by canceling!
