Welcome!
I do not think this is an issue unique to Macs. Should apply equally to any videoconferencing gear.
For my Macs using FaceTime, Zoom, and Citrix, I've only used ambient light from ceiling fixtures, nothing special, and I seen to show up fine for other conferees. That is on a 27-inch iMac 5K at home, and an old 13-inch Macbook Pro I use for travel. The Macbook Pro should be a challenge because it is used in hotel rooms, notorious for poor lighting, yet I've had no issues reported.
Unless very diffuse, any front lighting on your face is going fatigue your vision pretty fast, so I cannot see that as an option. Bounce or side lighting maybe. Some people use a green screen behind them so the room they are in does not show to other users. Handy if your spouse walks by wearing little more than a smile.
I don't think you need to overthink this. Use The PhotoBooth app as test platform and see how you look. Conferees are going to see pretty much what you so in a PhotoBooth test. If you need more light, search Amazon for "videoconference lighting" and see what they show.
Post back if we can clarify anything
