OS 14.2.1 How to force Spotlight to re-index HD

Search box on Finder windows returns null results for any and all searches. Can I re-index the hard drive? I have tried adding the HD to Spotlight Privacy window in order to then remove it to start re-index. However, I get an error message that the "add" failed due to "system error". What next? Thanks.

Please follow the instructions in Rebuild the Spotlight index on your Mac - Apple Support

If you still cannot re-index then restart in Safe Mode and try re-indexing while in Safe Mode, then restart normally.

CleanMyMac is considered malware experienced users on these forums, please uninstall per the developers instructions and then restart in Safe Mode. Then attempt to re-index. If you still cannot then download and run FindAnyFile (the free version) and have it look for:

  • CleanMyMac
  • Macpaw (Note: Macpaw is the developers of CMM)

and put any files with those names in the Trash and empty the Trash.

CMM has a long and sordid history of modifying Mac OS that creates all types of Mayhem. It does absolutely nothing that Mac OS cannot already do. Malwarebytes is fine and you can continue to use it and keep it up-to-date.
