how to share a scanner

I have a Canoscan LIDE120 scanner attached over USB to a Monterey system. Works great. I would like to share this scanner with a second machine on the network, also running a contemporary operating system. Is that possible? If so, how exactly? No question that the second machine could, in principle, just log into the first,and keep a shared folder there, but I'd like to keep the scanner files off the desktop of the first.

I guess I'd like to use the scanner on the second machine without any impact on the first.

I doubt this can be done via the network. Scanner sharing was removed from macOS about 10 years ago.

Regarding the save location, you can set the save location in whatever scanning app you use. No reason things have to go on your desktop.

There are some 3rd party network devices that would effectively make the scanner a networked scanner (on its own, not connected to a Mac or other computer). You would also have to verify that the LIDE app would recognize a non-USB connected scanner. Research needed!

Thanks. I think that's the answer. There used to be a "scanner sharing" feature long ago, but that disappeared. And yes, that's true, I can save the scan file anywhere, but I'd rather not have the user on the second computer opening up the Canon IJ Scan Utility app on the desktop of the scanner-local coomputer, which is where it would open. The idea would be for the user on the second computer to use the scanner in a way that is entirely invisible to the user on the computer the scanner is connected to. That's what I call true "scanner sharing".
