PICTURE EDITING: Whoever thought the new gray shapes were going to be used by ANYONE?? What a huge step backwards. Has anyone figured out how to get around it?

You need to change the fill and outline colors in the Markup Toolbar.
What grey shapes are you referring to, in which app, on what Mac, running which version of macOS?

In the previous iPhotos we were able to go to shapes and pick out a circle to draw attention to something in the picture. In the new updated version the shapes are no longer outlines, but useless gray shapes that obscure the area of interest.
