can airpods be tracked by previous owner

I have been given (can prove it..) a pair of AirPods by a friend who still has them registered to his Apple ID. My question is: can they still track them even when they say they can’t?

Yes! As long as they are still registered to their Apple ID, they will be able to track you. Even if you can prove that they were given to you, the owner will always be the person whose account the AirPods are associated with. They will need to reset the AirPods to factory settings which requires their Apple ID Password in order to give them to you so you can resister them with your Apple ID.
