Magentic Time line doesn't work

I recently updated my computer and now is running with Monterey. I also updated final cut pro, I have version 10.6.8 but the magnetic time line doesn't work. I have to stick clips manually and it's a waste of time.

How can I enable the magnetic timeline?. With the previous version the magnetic time line was working fine but now with the updated version it doesn't.

As everyone here is alluding to, the issue is that you started your project by editing audio. The audio files ended up in the primary storyline (the dark bar in the middle.) Every video clip that you added became connected clips, which connected to the audio in the primary storyline. You can confirm this by grabbing one of the audio clips, and you will see that all of the video clips move with it… Because they're connected to it. The fastest fix for this is going to be to highlight all of the video at once and hit command option down arrow. This will take all the video clips and put them in the primary storyline and convert the audio to connected clips. After that you will be able to use the primary storyline in the way you were used to.

Hope this helps!

Hello!

Several things might be at play here: you may have accidentally deactivated snapping in the timeline. Hit N to reactivate it. If you toggle it on and off, you will see the snapping icon appear in the top right corner of the timeline, which can also be used.

You may also have accidentally switched over to the position tool (P). if this is the case, then you can easily get back to the selection tool by hitting A.

Lastly you can always try deleting your FCP preferences:

  • Open Final Cut Pro X holding the Command and Option keys down.
  • Click the Delete Preferences button.

Hope this helps!

Right now, this very second, memorize these three keyboard shortcuts, they're the most used in the Timeline.

P - Position Tool, overrides magnetic timeline and overwrites everything.

A - Arrow Tool, works with magnetic timeline active, things slide around as expected.

T - Trim Tool, for various trimming and slip/slide operations.

Thank you for your help. So mean I have the audio in the primary storyline?

Yes, and it is fine to work that way. I sometimes do it, as do others (it is quite usual especially, but not exclusively, for music videos, to have the audio in the primary)

If you prefer to have the video in the primary storyline instead, it's not hard to do from where you are now:

1) select all the audio, and press Command-Option-UpArrow to "Lift from Storyline"

2) select all the video, and press Command-Option-DownArrow to "Overwrite to Primary Storyline"

In addition to what has been said already: it may help if you post a screenshot to illustrate where you are seeing the problem. By your description, it seems to me that you may be working with connected clips, in which case it is perfectly normal.

It could be that you had the Position tool activated, but then you'd see Gap Clips filling the er... gaps between clips.

Again, a screenshot would clarify the situation.

I have Final Cut Pro not Final Cut Pro X. I’ve tried what you said and none of that worked

What version do you have?

FWIW, Final Cut Pro since version 10 was dubbed "X" to distinguish it from "legacy" Final Cut Pro (version 7 and earlier); at some point Apple dropped the "X", but it is still common to refer to it as Final Cut Pro X or FCP X.
