How to fix multiple apps crash error code 6 Abort Trap on macOS

Hello, I'm experiencing app crashes for multiple apps, both of which are giving me the same termination reason: "Namespace SIGNAL, Code 6 Abort Trap: 6" and the same exception: "EXC_CRASH (SIGABRT)".


This has happened so far in QuickTime Player and in Steam while running Stardew Valley, specifically when I join a co-op game. The QuickTime Player crash happened after I tried to edit a video file. The Stardew Valley crash happens every time I open the game, and it has for months, always with the same above text in the error report. Typically it will crash after a minute or two, then when I retry afterwards it crashes almost immediately.


I have a MacBook Pro, with an Apple M3 chip and 8GB of memory. I'm running macOS Sonoma 14.2.1.


Please help!

If you need to be 'present" on an Institution's network, for work or study, that is a great use of third-party VPN software. your institution typically specifies and maintains that connection for you, or at least provides a help desk for it.


Almost every user-installed VPN was installed as scare-ware -- the seller induced you to install it by telling you your security would be SO much better if you did. It was not needed before, and now you are discovering just how inconvenient it can be.


Remove that VPN software, and live happily ever after.

By far the easiest way to cause poor performance, instability, overheating and crashing is to install ANY third-party speeder-uppers, Cleaners, Optimizers, or Virus scanners. or a VPN that you installed yourself. The main reason is that they are relentless in scanning your files, non-stop, looking for things virus-like patterns in Everything. When completed, they do it all again.


The idea that a third party, with no special knowledge of the inner workings of MacOS, can somehow find a simple way to protect your computer — that is not already being done by MacOS itself — suggests that the MacOS developers are somehow "holding out on you". That is absurd.


You should remove any and all (other than Apple built-in) virus scanners, speeder uppers, optimizers, cleaners, App deleters or VPN packages you installed yourself, or anything of that ilk.


Third-party file Sync-ers such as DropBox, BackBlaze, OneDrive, or GoogleDrive can ruin performance, but are not inherently dangerous.

Download and run this little "discovery" Utility, Etrecheck. it is recommended and used daily on the forums. it changes NOTHING. It sole purpose is to make some lists of what's installed and running run a few tests, and build a digest of recent problems. It creates a report suitable for Sharing, and Pasting into an 'Additional Text' window on the forums reply template.

Hi Grant, thank you so much for your quick response.

I checked through my apps and I don't have any VPNs or other third-party optimizers installed. I just bought this computer in November 2023 so I haven't had much time to install an app like this and then forget about it. These crashes started happening very soon into buying this computer. Weirdly enough, they also happened to my previous computer (a different MacBook Pro), though less frequently.

What else could be causing these crashes? Could the fact that this also happened to my previous laptop provide any clues?

I don't know how I missed your posting your report, but I did. Sorry about that.


Your report is not showing any traditional Bad Actors. It is not showing Applications completely exhausting system resources, with the exception of Chrome, the most intensive resource guzzler that is not obvious malware. if you can switch to a different browser, you should. if you can QUIT Chrome (not just close all its windows) when you do other intensive work or launch your game that would improve performance.


it does show that have been short of real RAM, so over 1000 M Bytes were at some point Emulated on disk instead of real RAM.


Your report also only shows ONE instance of the panic in the last 60 days, and that one ONLY happened in Stardew Valley. When problem occurs in only one Application, that suggest the problem is inside that Application. Best advice in that case is to contact the developer and see if they can provide additional guidance.
