Initiating charging on a magnetic breakaway adapter

To reduce the wear on my iPad lightning port I purchased an adapter cable with a magnetic lightning tip that stays in place. The magnetic connector on the cable just clicks on and off, the tip stays in the port. Once it’s been charging, disconnecting and reconnecting the cable stops and restarts the charging as expected. Reconnect it after it’s been disconnected for a few hours, and it does nothing. It will not restart charging until I unplug and replug the lightning connector from the port, which is exactly the operation I seek to avoid. It’s like it needs to be awakened, like “Oh, am I supposed to recognize that you’re giving me recharging power?
