JBL speaker showing up as “cannot be verified as genuine AirPods”?

I have recently bought a JBL charge 5 and haven’t had any issues with connecting to it since the past week. The problem first started as- I could connect my speaker, but my phone wouldn’t automatically route audio to it (I would have to change the audio device in airplay and Bluetooth). Now, the speaker still connects, but I cannot select it as an audio device at all. It still shows up, but when I click it, it just loads and doesn’t route. In Bluetooth settings there is also a warning that says “These headphones could not be verified as genuine AirPods and may not behave as expected” which doesn’t make sense at all because it’s not even an apple device. I clicked “connect anyway” but it still won’t let me select it as an audio device. I went to my closest Apple Store and they ran hardware checks on my phone (iPhone 13) and there was no apparent issues. So they told me to wipe my phone and restore off of a backup. The issue is still present after setting up my phone again. The issue isn’t present on any other device but my iPhone. Please help!

iPhone 13, iOS 17

  1. Check if there is a firmware update available for your JBL Charge 5. Sometimes, manufacturers release updates to improve compatibility with various devices
  2. Make sure that the JBL Charge 5 is compatible with your iPhone model. Check the JBL website or contact their customer support for any specific compatibility issues.
  3. If possible, try connecting the JBL Charge 5 to another iPhone to see if the issue persists. This will help determine if the problem is specific to your iPhone or the speaker.
  4. Reach out to JBL customer support for assistance. They may have insights into any known issues or solutions for this specific problem.
  5. Consult the user manual for your specific JBL Charge 5 model to find the instructions for resetting it to factory settings. This process may vary depending on the model, but usually involves holding down a certain button combination for a specific amount of time.
  6. Forget and re-pair the device:
    1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, find your JBL speaker on the list, and tap the "i" icon next to it.
    2. Choose "Forget This Device" to remove the pairing.
    3. Then, put your JBL speaker in pairing mode and re-pair it with your iPhone.

Additionally:

  • It's interesting that the Apple Store couldn't identify the issue after running hardware checks. Although unlikely, you might want to consider getting a second opinion from another Apple technician or authorized service center.
  • Since the issue isn't present on other devices, it seems isolated to your iPhone. While the error message is misleading, it could be an incompatibility with the JBL speaker. You could try updating to the latest iOS version.

Hi, so after doing some more testing it seems this issue is exclusive to devices signed into my Apple ID (In this case I have an old IPhone SE 2nd gen that is also signed into my Apple ID, it could play audio the first time, but when I turned on wifi, it wouldn’t) I’m guessing that some data from my iPhone 13 was transferred from my SE when I turned on wifi? I also tested on a 6s, worked completely fine. My JBL Charge 5 is on the latest firmware, and I have re-paired it multiple times (and factory reset it). It is a really bizarre issue. I have reset “all settings” and “network settings” and that didn’t fix the issue either.
