News app no longer plays when iPhone is locked

I like to listen to CNN while I’m browsing or on my way to work but since the end of January it will no longer play unless I keep the app open and the phone unlocked. Is there a way to change this?

If your News app is no longer playing audio when your iPhone is locked, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to address this issue:

1. Check Audio Settings:

- Go to Settings on your iPhone.

- Scroll down and tap on "News."

- Under "Audio," ensure that the "Play Audio in Background" option is enabled.

2. Restart your iPhone:

- A simple restart can sometimes resolve minor glitches. Turn off your iPhone and then turn it back on.

3. Update iOS:

- Make sure your iPhone is running the latest version of iOS. Go to Settings > General > Software Update.

4. Background App Refresh:

- Ensure that Background App Refresh is enabled for the News app. Go to Settings > News > Background App Refresh.

5. Check Battery Settings:

- Go to Settings > Battery.

- Make sure that Low Power Mode is disabled, as it can affect background app activity.

6. Clear App Cache (if applicable):

- Some apps allow you to clear cache or app data. If the News app has this option, try clearing the cache.

7. Reinstall the News App:

- Delete the News app from your iPhone and reinstall it from the App Store. This can help resolve any corrupted files.

8. Contact Apple Support:

- If the issue persists, it's advisable to contact Apple Support for further assistance. They may be able to provide more specific guidance based on your device and iOS version.

9. Check CNN Settings (if using a third-party app):

- If you're using a third-party app to listen to CNN within the News app, check its settings for any specific audio playback options or restrictions.

10. Submit Feedback to Apple:

- If none of the above solutions work, consider submitting feedback to Apple through the Feedback app or Apple's website. This helps Apple identify and address potential issues in future updates.

By going through these steps, you should be able to troubleshoot and resolve the problem with the News app not playing audio when your iPhone is locked.

CNN app. I tried that already, no luck. Hopefully apple or CNN will fix the issue.

I downloaded and tested it and had no problem. So I suspect there is something particular with your phone. That means you'll need to do some troubleshooting as updates, either to the CNN app or to iOS, will most likely not solve your problem.

Basic troubleshooting would be restarting, restore from back up, restore to factory settings.

I've gone through all the steps except the first and it's still happening. The first step says under "audio" and I don't have an "audio" option under what I am assuming you mean by news, (CNN.)

Yeah, that's because there is no such setting. Be wary of answers copied and pasted from ChatGPT (et al).

Are you asking about Apple's News app? Or about the CNN app? If you're asking about CNN, I'd start by deleting it and reinstalling it.

Hmm yeah, idk. I have researched it and found complaints of other people having the same issue. I am actually not even the OP of this thread. Hopefully the next update will fix it. Thanks for the feedback!

Again, it works just fine for me so, I doubt an update is going to do anything. But, if you don't want to troubleshoot the issue, that's up to you.

Best of luck.

There are 2 billion iPhones in use. No matter what problem you have, there is sure to be someone else with similar symptoms, which may or may not be caused by the same problem. So the fact that other people have the same symptom is a nothingburger. If you have a problem your choice is to ignore it or troubleshoot it. Waiting for another release will generally not be fruitful, because the problem is not the release, it is your phone and your settings and configuration.
