I am having problems with my MacBook Pro bought December 2020 , it tells me the battery needs to be changed. I had similar problems with my iPhone. Is Apple shortchanging us by putting bad batteries in their products?

Just when that replacement is required depends in large part on your patterns of use of the device. Four years for a laptop doesn't sound unusual. Likewise for a phone.
