Notifications Appearing on Apple Watch instead of on iPhone - Solved
This is not a question. I just want to share my experience in case it helps somebody else who has the same problem.
Since purchasing an Apple Watch almost 2 years ago, I have often missed important notifications -- most unfortunately, some incoming urgent SMS messages and also notifications that my video doorbell was ringing. I understand that it is Apple's design that while you are wearing your watch and while your iPhone is also locked, all audible and vibration notifications go to the watch instead of the phone.
While my Apple Watch would vibrate and make a sound when the notification came through, the vibration was often too weak to notice (even though I had it set to "prominent") and similarly, the sound was too low to hear, even though I had it set to maximum. Missing notifications was particularly problematic if I was doing something like working in the garden or doing home repair or maintenance activities.
I called Apple Support and they basically told me "many customers have made a similar complaint but our design is that notifications only appear on one device at a time -- your phone or your watch. So, sorry, there's nothing we can do for you."
Last week, I was ready to toss my Apple Watch in the trash bin after missing an important package delivery because I didn't hear the doorbell. But then I stumbled on some posts on the Internet that explained there is a workaround to my problem.
By disabling "Wrist Detection" on the Apple Watch (Settings/Passcode/Wrist Detection), all sound and vibration notifications will now appear on both the iPhone and on the Watch. Which is exactly the behavior I want. I don't know why Apple Support didn't share this with me. I understand that disabling "Wrist Detection" has some downsides. For instance, because your watch no longer knows if you're wearing it or not, it doesn't lock automatically when you take it off your wrist (a bit of a security risk). Nor does it make emergency SOS calls if you fall. These are surely issues -- and I wish I didn't have to sacrifice anything to get my notifications. But at the end of the day, it's a compromise I can live with. It's more important that I not miss notifications.
That said, I wish Apple would listen to its customers and find a better solution so that a user can choose where to get notifications. It seems silly that they haven't provided a way to configure getting them on both devices at the same time IF THAT IS WHAT YOU WANT.
