I believe Apple made a change to how Find My worked in iOS 13. Before that, there were separate Find My iPhone and Find My Friends apps. Afterwards, there was a single Find My app that combined both functions. (Its current version requires iOS 14 or later.). If you are on iOS 14 or later, you could try downloading the Find My app and using it. (Note: some phones, like the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, can't upgrade that far.)

The other thing that comes to mind is that you can't use your iPhone to see another person's location unless you're on a Family Sharing plan where location sharing is set up; or unless they've chosen to share their location with you.

Have you checked to see that your son is still sharing his location with you?
