Why only 245gb capacity on 512gb disk for new Mini?
My new Mac mini M2 shows only 245 gb capacity on the 512gb SSD. Only 135gb shows as being used with 102gb available. What am I missing?

How are you checking the Storage space...?
1) Go to: Apple > About This Mac > Storage
2) Control (right) click on the Macintosh HD and select Get Info.
3) Did you or someone Partition the Macintosh HD into two parts using Disk Utility..?
The Apple SSD APO256Z Media indicates that Mac mini only has a 256GB SSD.
If you bought and paid for a 512GB model, then I suggest that you contact Apple Support and/or take the Mac mini back to the Apple Store for a refund or exchange.
To view the different Mac mini models that are available,
see > Mac mini - Technical Specifications - Apple
and > Buy Mac mini - Apple
Likewise if you are un-happy or that is not what you bough, then you have 14 days to return that Mac mini no questions asked.
You're welcome.
It's not as streamline, but you can put your Photos, Music and Movie Libraries on an external drive.

Yes that’s the new way they found to make us doubt and purchase more iCloud 😉
I have a 2TB which shows barely 350gb available, and - well unsure about this - i think it might have to do with stuff you have on iCloud and on the mac. But don’t take my word on this.
I too, if you tell me i have 500gb and i use 200, don’t tell me i have 50 remaining - i’ll wonder how i passed my primary school maths 🤣
Been wondering for months - will be curious to read answers on this.
OK, my bad. I apparently did NOT upgrade to the 512gb, though I wanted to. As I have a 1TB external drive for document/file storage, I'll probably stick with the 256gb. (Unless someone has a good reason for me to pay $200 more).
Thanks to those who responded...
Both option 1 & 2 you suggested provides the same result:
In Disk Utility I see this:
The mini is new, however I used Time Machine to port everything over from my old, troublesome iMac 2017.
