iOS 17.3 has broken Apple CarPlay

Since updating to iOS 17.3 Apple CarPlay no longer works for my iPhone in my car. It still works perfectly for my partner and daughter, who are still using iOS 17.2. Does Apple realise there is serious bug?

iPhone SE, 17

SOLUTION FOUND. I sell cars for a living and i found the fix for my customer and was curious to see if other people are having the issue:

the update moved carplay into the the restricted apps under screentime. To fix this go to settings>screen time> content & privacy restrictions> turn carplay BACK ON. Why the update switched it off is beyond me but that seems to be the fix 👍🏼

The vehicle manufacturer is not going to have a “Fix”. CarPlay issues are typically 98% of the time on the iPhone. What ultimately worked for me under 17.3.1 was to disable “Private relay” on my phone. This feature doesn’t get along very well with CarPlay and tries to take over the required WiFi connection. Just disable the thing and you should be good.

17.3.1 works for me with CarPlay. Pro tip: Disable “Private Relay”. This feature does not play nicely with CarPlay. Ever since disabling it, it has been working pretty consistently and CarPlay enable as soon as I enter my car. Remember that CarPlay uses WiFi to connect. Note I am able to play Spotify etc. Now Spotify 8.9.14 (Most recent update) has some issues of its own. But everything works as expected.

My wife has an iPhone 13 Mini that was playing nicely with her new Honda Civic, until iOS 17.3.1 at which point the phone connected via Carplay but map navigation ceased to work. Music was fine, even WAZE worked flawlessly but not Apple Map navigation. I spent 3 hours trying to solve the problem and finally called Apple. It took them only 10 minutes to mention that VPN might be the problem and indeed she was running NordVPN on the phone. I deleted that app and all now appears to be well. Of course they couldn't explain why 17.3.1 caused the problem but at least it appears to be solved. btw, I tried every fix in this thread and others before I gave up and called Apple. Next time I think that I'll call them first.

I had issues getting wired car play working on iPhone 15 pro when previous models worked ok. One thing I noted before I did what worked for me was that my car entertaiment system would detect my iPhone as an iPod so I could select it as an audio source. With me what seemed to work was disconnecting the cable. Removing any bluetooth pairings to my car from my phone and from my car to my phone. Switched car off, rebooted phone. Switched car on, unlocked phone and physically connected the cable. Carplay detected and has worked ever since.

Well, I solved the problem. I found another thread where someone having the same issue in an older CR V rebooted their infotainment system. I then found a YouTube video that showed how to reboot a system like the one that’s in my car. I rebooted, re-paired the wireless CarPlay and now it’s working again. So that seems to solve the issue should an iOS update cause problems. Depending on how complex your car’s infotainment system is, it wouldn’t hurt to find out it can be rebooted.

OK. I got it. I found the error (for myself).

After I figured it out (however), I was able to reproduce the error today.

After I only paired the iPhone via Bluetooth (disable CarPlay) to synchronize my contacts with the car, I couldn't start CarPlay again.

After I deactivated Bluetooth on the iPhone and only WIFI was active, I was able to start CarPlay again. After CarPlay was connected, I activated Bluetooth again on the iPhone and it continued to work.

Maybe it will help you to completely deactivate Bluetooth in the CarPlay pairing process.

Good Luck

I’ve been working with Apple support for about a week now and my issue (same as everyone) has been escalated to the IOS engineers. Have follow up call tomorrow. In the meantime, I found a wireless adapter on Amazon to make CarPlay work wirelessly! Best $40 I’ve ever spent!

but hopefully Apple fixes it bc it was allllll fine before the 17.3.1 update.
